South Kingstown is an area known for its affluence as well as for the beauty of much of its housing stock. In fact, at least two houses in the local area are on the National Register of Historic Places, these being the Red House and Hale House. There are many older houses surviving in this area, many of them with traditional clapboard exteriors and architectural features that are redolent of the styles of a bygone era. Nevertheless, these homes are often easily maintained and balance the character that comes with age with modern additions.
The area has also been a summer resort for much of its history and the reason that Edward Everett Hale first began living in Hale House was that he found it was a pleasant place to summer. South Kingstown has ten miles of uninterrupted, sandy beaches that make it a great place to take kids or to retire to in off-season to relax. Many of the homes in the area are therefore second homes and this gives it a particular character, making it laid back on the whole.
Those who plan to live there year-round, however, will find that there are a wide variety of schools in the South Kingstown School District. There are nine schools in all in this district, open to kids from before kindergarten age to 12th grade. Most students will go to High School at South Kingstown High which has just over 1,000 students, several award winning sports teams and a renowned music and arts programme.
The town also takes some of its character from the fact that it is a university town, supporting the University of Rhode Island, a public research institution with over 20,000 students enrolled at any one time. This helps ensure that the town remains a lively place to be with plenty going on. Plus, if you are planning to move to South Kingstown this means that there is the possibility of your children being able to save on accommodation costs when they go to college.
